HOW LONG SHOULD AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION LAST?

Most modern automatic transmissions should last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles with good maintenance and driving habits. Regular transmission inspections and maintenance must be performed by specialized technicians like AAMCO to detect early symptoms and solve them before they can cause internal transmission damage.

Common Causes of Transmission Failures are:

Overheating – The cooling system in your vehicle controls not only the engine temperature but also your transmission in addition to other components. Coolant leaks must be addressed immediately to avoid early transmission failures. AAMCO Transmission can repair your coolant issues and also install auxiliary coolers if you plan to tow or simply to extend the life of your transmission in stop-and-go traffic

Stop-and-go traffic- A transmission in heavy traffic is continuously shifting up and down which burdens the transmission. In addition, while stopped in traffic, the radiator does not receive enough air flow and causes higher operating temperatures inside the transmission.

Aggressive driving and hard acceleration- The stress that this causes in the whole vehicle is magnified in the drivetrain -engine, transmission, differential- which shortens the life of these components.

Ignoring Warning Signs and Service Bulletins- Ignoring the warning lights on the instrument panel such as the “check engine” light should be avoided. Addressing them immediately may avoid costly repairs down the road. Your AAMCO dealer can scan your vehicle and recommend the right repair for free. AAMCO can also advise you of manufacturer’s recalls and service bulletins that may be pending for your vehicle. Other early signs such as fluid leaks, unusual noises, slips, etc. must be addressed immediately.

Engine Maintenance-A well maintained engine avoids misfires and other problems that place additional loads on your transmission. Have your AAMCO dealer maintain your engine in top shape which will extend the life of the engine, the transmission and everything else in your vehicle while providing you a more comfortable ride.

Act Early

50% of the vehicles we see at AAMCO Transmissions do not have an internal transmission problem. Modern transmissions are electronically controlled and transmissions shifting erratically may have an external cause that can be easily solved. Have your experienced AAMCO Transmission Center diagnose the problem before it gets bigger and expensive.

Who should maintain your transmission

The transmission is the most complex component in your vehicle. Modern transmissions have computers controlling when they shift; internal solenoids performing the upshifts and downshifts, hundreds of internal components that provide an efficient ride and specialized fluids that provide the hydraulic pressure internally. Externally it interacts with other computers and electronic controls in your vehicle placed in the differentials, engine, transfer case, etc. A regular mechanic is not qualified to diagnose and repair the complex components in your transmission. Trust only your specialized AAMCO Transmission center to maintain and repair your transmission.

And remember that AAMCO is the only one with a nationwide warranty.
